Barlings Road

The original garden felt dated and was dominated by large overgrown evergreen shrubs that made the garden feel smaller. Although it is a sunny garden the space for outdoor entertaining and dining was limited and paving was in need of replacement. Heartwood Garden Design created a large contemporary front driveway area in resin bound gravel with sawn granite setts. Low maintenance planting creates summer colour and interest a low yew hedge has created some much needed enclosure and privacy from the road on this quite wide plot. In the back garden the large centralised lawn is retained as space for family games and play and a small area of astroturf was added to create year round access to the play frame. A small vegetable garden was also added along with a beautiful porcelain patio and stepping stones leading to a smaller more secluded second patio in the corner of the garden. A beautiful existing mature apple tree has been retained as the key focal point of the garden and all other areas of the garden were replaced with a range of colourful plants and trees.

The garden was build by local landscaping team Armstrong Landscapes based at Hertfordshire Garden Centre.

This beautiful larger garden was designed by Heartwood Garden Design completing both the front and rear gardens which now feature as a garden in the National Garden Scheme. The back garden is a beautiful new sandstone patio close to the house with gravel paths, deep mixed borders and seating areas within gravel. A swing seat is also located next to a drilled stone water feature providing a beautiful, spacious and relaxed family garden.

In the front garden a lavender lined secondary gravel drive was installed leading to a large timber double garage. New boundary screening trees were installed as well as screening single pergola, yew hedging and colourful new planted borders for sun and shade.

Barnet Hospital

Adjoining the new Covid ward at Barnet Hospital this garden has been designed as a space for quiet relaxation for hospital teams. Gabion retaining walls are used to manage the level change and to create an area of colourful, naturalistic planting. Plants are nectar rich and the habitat is designed to support beneficial insects and attract birds.

"Our teams are delighted with this concept and are looking forward to enjoying a much needed space for quiet relaxation. A beautiful space will be a valuable asset for our hardworking teams here a the hospital and we excited about seeing this built."

Orchard House

This large country garden in Hertfordshire is set in a beautiful agricultural landscape. An existing large deep pond had become unmanageable and large trees blocked viewed across from the house to the pond area and orchard beyond. Existing patio and path areas were to be made larger to create space for outdoor dining and a lounge area. An area to the side of the house lacked a sense of identity and there was limited colourful planting to be seen from the windows to the back of the house.

Heartwood Garden Design created a master plan for the key areas of the garden including the creation of a circular deck to enjoy afternoon and evening sun alongside a natural pool and waterfall, renovated to make it smaller and surrounded by colourful planting through limestone gravel. The large existing limestone rockery was renovated, large stones added and existing stones re- organised and the whole area was re-planted. Existing gravel paths were widened and sweeping curves introduced to connect to the newly formed natural bowl created by the pond. Closer to the house, beautiful tumbled grey limestone paver now flow through colourful planted borders leading to a circular secluded seating area by the side of the house, enclose with a low yew hedge and a large central patio by the kitchen enclosed with colourful planted border and including a simple lily bowl flowing water feature.

The garden was beautiful constructed by Letchworth based Custom Gardens.

“The flowing shapes of the design really complement our house and our gardens and all of the areas that we felt were disconnected now flow beautifully into each other. We have so many new seating areas and each one has a different outlook and atmosphere, some are quiet and peaceful and others are perfect for large groups of family and friends. We love it!”

The Four Winds

This large house and associated gardens is part of major rebuilding project in a beautiful part of Hertfordshire. A sweeping resin bound gravel drive leads to a dramatic front entrance in sawn York stone. Paths lead to a sunny seating area with pleached trees providing enclosure and shading. A self binding gravel path leads through the garden to a stunning raised composite deck with built in water blade waterfall and a stepping stone path leads back to the house. A smaller contemporary courtyard to the side of the house features build in seating with a gas fire pit and the rear of the house features attractive and low maintenance composite decking.

The Chilterns Raised Patio

This raised patio replaced an existing narrow and dangerous patio and decked area. A dramatic flight of curved steps creates a sight line to a beautiful natural swimming pool. Terraced planting beds and almost invisible wire balustrade create feeling of airy spaciousness to the patio and surround it with colourful and exuberant planting. A lower secluded ‘patio snug’ provides a peaceful area for quiet relaxation with oak arches over a sawn sandstone patio with stepping stones.

"This was stage two of our garden renovation. Before we had a narrow, unsafe patio with no-where to sit and no views of the garden. Now the garden is spread out before us, we have beautiful steps that lead down into the garden at two points and plenty of space for a huge dining table and outdoor sofas. A lower level we have stunning vibrant planting which is tall enough to enjoy from the patio and seems to flower all summer!'"

High Trees

This wrap around patio with dramatic corner steps is designed to be a spacious and contemporary garden for entertaining and relaxing. A corner flight of steps lead to the wider garden and orchard and trees and shrubs enclose the patio providing colourful, naturalistic planting. A large steel pergola covers the dining area and the seating area features a gas fire pit. An informal seating area close to bedroom bifold doors leads down steps to a large swimming pool.

"We had been building our new house and had completely forgotten to think about the garden. Judy explained the design process clearly using great design visuals as well as talking to us about materials, plants and trees and the overall vision for our garden. We are so pleased with the result, it's a garden that really matches our house and our lifestyle."

This unusual house has two distinct personalities: a traditional front garden to complement the brick and flint facade of this former Almshouse with sweeping gravel driveways, Yorkstone paving and Yew hedging and cushions with lavender lined borders. In the back garden there is a more informal contemporary garden with an outdoor kitchen, steel pergola enclosed dining area, a fire pit lounge seating area and built in hot tub leading down steps to a large swimming pool. The wider garden features deeply planted mixed borders and an orchard.

"We said that we wanted a party garden and this is what we have, a perfect space for dining, entertaining, family and friends."

This small town garden was a difficult shape due to an additional piece of land added to it. The design creates a large contemporary space for dining and entertaining including a timber pergola seating areas. A new astroturf lawn is edged with a resin bound gravel path leading to small secluded seating area. Lots of colourful and lush planting have made this a much loved and cared for garden.
