Contemporary Hitchin Town Garden
This garden in Hitchin, Hertfordshire was previously very dated and in need of complete re-design to create a spacious contemporary family garden.
Our clients for this Hitchin garden felt that their current garden was under utilised and didn’t match their lifestyle. With grown up teenage sons they wanted a garden that felt cool and contemporary and offered lots of space for relaxing with family and friends, as well as a large lawn and richly planted colourful borders.

The Story Behind the Garden
This garden felt very dated before it was re-designed. Different level changes within the garden felt that the space felt hard to use and the clients rarely spent time in the garden. With two children now largely grown up, they felt that it was time to re-create the garden in a style that suited both their personal style and lifestyle. Although they still wanted a large area of lawn for garden games, they felt that a much larger area was needed for outdoor eating and relaxing.
The re-design utilised the beauty and warmth of the existing red brick wall which enclosed part of the garden, with a decked area creating a secluded and warm area for relaxing. Tall, airy plants including grasses and tall colourful plants provided a backdrop to this area. And the views of a neighbouring roof were screened with three ornamental pear trees. The level change from the house down into the garden became a feature with a dramatic corner flight of wide stone steps leading to the decked area. A beautiful pool of water and water blade waterfall also creates movement and sound and large cobbles set within the pool allow birds and insects access to water. A further flight of steps leads up, past colourful sunny planted borders and into a large area of lawn, enclosed with planting.
As well as water the garden also features fire, in the form of a stunning Fire Pit Company feature. It’s a stunning piece of artwork by day and dramatic fire pit by night and perfect for keeping a bit of warmth in the garden as the sun goes down.
Plants in this garden were generally sun lovers as the south and west facing aspects of the garden make this a perfect spot for sun-loving plants. Plants include beautifully tall Verbena bonariensis, long-flowering Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ and hot coloured late season flowering Helenium ‘Salsa’ among many others.
Transformation Captured in Three Moments
We use 3D visuals and videos to show our clients the transformation of the garden at the Concept Design stage, it’s an invaluable part of our Design Process.
Levels changes in a garden create the perfect opportunity to introduce drama into a space. In this garden the contrast between the clean lines of the hard landscaping and the softer elements of the plants, trees and water feature meant that the drama of the sunken garden was perfectly matched with the tranquility, colour and atmosphere of the planting design.
Designer’s Insight
We couldn’t believe the transformation of our garden. It now feels like ‘our space’ and we’re out here all the time with friends and family. It feels like we’ve gained an extra room in our house and we’ve been so delighted with the work and the guidance from Heartwood Garden Design. It’s been a pleasure from start to finish.
