The Story Behind the Garden

This compact garden in Hertford was very much in need of a thoughtful re-design. A single story extension on the house provided the ideal opportunity to re-design both the front and rear gardens. The back garden was overgrown and an existing grey block wall felt as though it crowded the house and didn’t allow enough space for the large sunny patio that this client wanted.

The brief was to create secluded, colorful and plant rich garden sanctary for relaxation and entertaining, but also to create space for older parents who would be moving into the newly built annexe to the house. It was to be a garden that suited three generations with plenty of space for relaxing, entertaining and BBQ’s with family and friends. And while entertaining was an important part of the brief, so was quiet peaceful relaxation, sitting by a gentle waterfall surrounded by shade and sun-loving plants.

The garden design was use of warm natural materials, stunning warm beige limestone, silvered oak arches, beautiful tonal yellow quartz paddlestone clad walls, alongside mellow ebony grey decking, all connecting together to create a peaceful and beautifully built garden. The warm patio provided a perfect spot for beautiful colourful mediterranean planting, with grasses, trailing rosemary, salvias and roses providing scent and beauty throughout the year.

Strong curves were also a feature of this garden, with a 1.2m high level change managed with terraced planting areas with broad copings which also double as informal seats for larger gatherings. The deck too features a gentle curve which arcs out over the pond to bring the seating area as close as possible to the beauty and tranqulity of moving water.

We think it’s a perfect garden, one of many lovely carefully crafted walled gardens that we’ve created in Hertfordshire. Take a look at the full portfolio images to enjoy the full effect.

Garden Transformation in Three Moments

It’s always fascinating to see a snapshot of a garden before construction, then visualised as a 3D model  and then finally completed.

A strong sweeping curve in this visualisation wraps around the house creating a secluded lower walled garden with terrace planting to provide colour, interest and drama throughout the year and a set of broad wide open steps into the upper have created areas of different character and planting. The transformation of this town garden is magical.

Designer’s Insight

“Heartwood Garden Design’s vision has transformed my garden a way that has amazed us. Judy’s vision for the garden guided the whole process, ensuring that the end result was completed as visualised. In addition, exceptional planting knowledge and skill have added a level of character and atmosphere to the garden which constantly draws us outside into the garden.”
